How To Repair a Star in a Windshield
Almost every vehicle will have to deal with a chipped or cracked windshield caused by rocks or other flying debris. Luckily, auto glass can be repaired if the chip or crack is small enough, which can save you from purchasing a new windshield. You can repair a star in a windshield yourself in a short amount of time.
- Purchase a do-it-yourself windshield crack repair kit. Most auto parts stores carry them. These kits use a clear resin that bonds with the glass and restores its integrity.
- Remove any loose glass from the star in the windshield.
- Clean the area completely using glass cleaner to remove any residue. This will ensure the resin adhears to the windshield properly and make a complete bond.
- Dry the windshield thoroughly, no moisture should remain on the windshield. Moisture can interfeere with the bonding process.
- Place the suction cup over the star on the windshield. The suction cup should be tight against the windshield and not loose.
- Pour repair resin into the tube and use the plunger to spread the material into the suction cup.
- Remove the suction cup after one minute.
- Place film over the cracked area and smooth it out, getting it as flat as possible. This will reduce the time it takes to scrape off excess resin.
- Wait 15 minutes for the resin to dry.
- Remove the film and scrape excess material from glass.
