Sharp, jagged rocks may rip or tear bike tires mid-ride. In order to save time and money, you can learn to repair cuts, tears and gouges easily from home or while you are out on a bike ride. Bring a few repair items on your ride to save yourself from having to walk home.
Supply List:
- Acetone
- Rubber Tire Patch
- Small squirt bottle filled with a mixture of dish soap and water
- Tire Pump
- Tube of Loc-Tite 4850
Directions:
- Remove the tire. Wash the entire area with soap and water and dry thoroughly. Clean the damaged area on tire with acetone. Allow a few minutes to dry.
- Lightly spread open the damaged area. Apply Loc-Tite to the two surfaces that need to be seamed back together. Allow to dry for 15 seconds until slightly tacky. Press firmly together for approximately five minutes.
- Once glue dries, remove the tire from the rim and turn it inside out.
- Spread a thin layer of glue on the inside surface of the tear and surrounding area. Let glue sit for 15 seconds to become tacky. Apply the rubber tire patch to tacky glue area on the inside of the tire. Apply firm pressure for at least one minute.
- Turn the tire right side in again. Gently reinstall tire on rim. Inflate the tire to the correct PSI.
- Spray a small amount of soapy water on the tire. Examine the tire closely for any bubbles. The presence of bubbles indicates that air is still leaking from the tire.
- Reinstall both the rim and tire on your bike. Take care to avoid further damage to the tire.
Caution!
Always wear proper eyewear protection.
