How To Resize Large Clothing
It's a fact that overtime many individuals loose weight. A common gripe is that the clothes they once loved no longer fit properly. A excellent solution to this problem is to re-size the clothing. The process is simple and short and will increase the life of the garment.
What You'll Need:
- Large shirt
- Full-length mirror
- Thread
- Straight pins
- Chalk pencil
- Needle or sewing machine
- Scissors
- Steam iron
- Spray starch
- Turn the large shirt inside out so that you are able to easily see the seams. Try the shirt on and place pins in the area where you want to re-size the shirt.
- Place pins along the side seams, beginning about 1/2 inch on the inside seam.
- Continue the pinning process through the armhole of the shirt and down the seam of the sleeves. Keep in mind the amount of fabric on the shirt you wish to reduce can be adjusted by moving the pins in closer or away from the seams.
- To reduce the width of the shoulders of the shirt, pin all the way around the sleeve starting with about 1/2 inch.
- For this step you'll need to ask a friend for assistance. Ask a friend to use a chalk pencil to mark the exact position of each of the pins before you begin removing them. Ensure that the marks are clear. These marks will be the only guide you have once you begin resizing the shirt.
- Take the shirt off but do not turn it inside out. Using thread that matches the shirt, begin sewing a seam along the border of the chalked line. Once you've finished this step, try the shirt on to ensure that it fits properly and make any necessary adjustments.
- Trim any allowances left behind from the new seam so that they are no greater than 1/2 inch wide. Complete the raw edges with an overcast stitch. Try the shirt on again, inside out, and place pins to fit alongside the shoulder seams.
- Begin stitching the new shoulder seams and then try the shirt on again to ensure proper fit.
- Lastly, launder the shirt. Use steam or spray starch along the seams, inside and out, to secure and finalize the process.
