How To Shift Gears on an ATV

ATV's, also known as all-terrain vehicles, are a safer alternative to riding dirt bikes. It has more wheels than a dirt bike, therefore making it less likely to fall off. Although ATV's are usually safer than dirt bikes they can still be highly dangerous, so before jumping on one it is extremely important to know how to shift gears.

Instructions:

  1. Practice switching gears in a safe and open environment.

  2. Turn the ignition on. Pull in the left lever, which is called the clutch then push the shift lever down four times. Slightly pull this lever back to put the ATV in neutral. Before doing anything else, make sure the neutral light is on. Then start the ATV by pushing the starter button.

  3. Put the ATV in first gear. To do this you should pull the clutch and press the shift lever down. Let go of the clutch very slowly until you feel the engine pull, then pull it back in.

  4. Turn the right handlebar and release the clutch completely. If done correctly, you should now be moving ahead. You can go faster or slower by turning the right handle bar.

  5. Give the top of the first gear range some acceleration and pull in the clutch. Shift the gear up until it clicks.

  6. Release the gear slowly and apply a normal amount of gas. This will place you in second gear.

  7. Keep this process up. When you are ready to get off of your ATV, you should close the throttle and pull in the clutch.

  8. Apply both the front and rear brakes with you right hand and foot. Shift the gears down into neutral
