How To Supersize a Clothing Pattern

There are some clothing patterns that would look great in larger sizes. The problem is that some designers stop creating patterns, after a certain size has been reached. Creating supersize clothing patterns from these preexisting patterns is easy, if you know the right steps to take.

Creating your own clothes can be rewarding, as well as a unique way of showing the world your creative side. When the only pattern you have is 10 sizes too small, the creative process can feel hampered. With a few easy tricks of the trade, you can supersize a clothing pattern within just a few minutes, to create the look that you want.

Things you will need to supersize a clothing pattern:

  • Ruler or measuring tape

  • Butcher’s paper or brown paper

  • Scissors

  • Marking pencil

Step 1- Lay the butcher’s paper or brown paper on a large, flat surface, such as a kitchen table. Make sure that the paper is held down on all corners. If necessary, place two pieces of butcher’s paper side by side and connect them securely with tape. This will give you the amount of space you need for the pattern to be super sized.

Step 2- Lay the original clothing pattern flat on the butcher’s paper. Notice that the lines are clearly marked on the pattern. These markings are usually found in the corners or directly on the sides of the pattern.

Step 3- Measure the distance between the size markings. Distances should be between 1 and 2 inches of each other. Continue the markings at the same amount of distance to note the clothing sizes, until you reach the desired supersized clothing pattern. For example, if the distance between sizes is 1 inch and you want to expand the pattern size by five sizes, you would increase the boundaries of the pattern by 5 inches.

Step 4- Measure and outline the pattern onto the butcher’s paper. Simply follow the pattern of the original clothing pattern and duplicate it onto the butcher’s paper. The outline on the butcher’s paper will form your new pattern.

Step 5- Cut out the new supersize clothing pattern from the butcher’s paper.
