How To Tell if a Diamond Is Real

Telling the difference between a real or a fake diamond is virtually impossible. It usually takes a lot of training and great skills to tell if it is fake just by looking at it. With just a few simple steps you can find out if the precious jewels you keep in your jewelry box are real or if the diamonds are a fake.

Instructions:

  1. Turn the stone upside-down and set it on a piece of paper like newspaper or a book with printed words. If you can read the print, most likely it is a fake because diamonds refract light.

  2. Breathe on the stone. Diamonds conduct heat, so if the stone stays foggy for about 4 or 5 seconds, chances are it is a fake. This plan is not 100 percent foolproof because some capped cubic zirconium are based with real diamond and moissanite and will pass this test.

  3. Inspect the mounting. If it's a good quality and does not contain the letters CZ, then your diamond could quite possibly be real.

  4. Observe the color of the diamond. Diamonds usually have a bit of a yellow tint to them, so if the diamond in question is perfectly clear it may be a fake.

  5. Check the cost of the diamond. If you are getting a really cheap price for it, chances are it is not real.

  6. Take it to a jeweler if you are still not completely sure. They will be able to perform a more accurate test to see if the stone is real.
