How To Touch Up Auto Paint

Knowing how to touch up auto paint is a good skill for those into car restoration or for the frugal car owner. The task of learning how to apply touch up paint can be simple and easy to do. Many people can avoid going to a car restoration service or repair shop if they know how to touch up the paint on their own vehicles.

  1. Prepare the car’s surface. Clean the entire car for several areas or for a single spot then just the clean up location. Use soapy water and a sponge or cloth.

  2. Add the base coat. Apply the touch up paint to the area by applying a thin layer. Wait approximately 15 minutes for the coat to dry before re-applying. Continue to build up the layers until they are about the same thickness as the rest of the car. Wait until the paint is fully dry before continuing.

  3. Use a clear coat. Apply using multiple thin layers. Allow time for each coat to dry before, applying a new one.

  4. Create a smooth finish. Wait for two to three days after applying the clear coat before applying the rubbing compound. Find a soft cloth and add a small amount of a car rubbing compound. Work using small circles and even pressure to massage the mixture onto the car’s surface. Make the paint shine by using a clean buffing cloth after applying the rub.

  5. Use a good wax. Allow the new touch up paint to dry for four weeks before applying a wax. Try a soft cloth to apply the wax and prolong the new finish of the auto.
