How To Unstick Auto Brakes

Your brakes are a vital part of you car's performance and safety. Regularly inspecting and maintaining your brake system from time to time can save you money that would be spent on expensive auto repairs. Brakes can become stuck for a number of reasons, many of which can be prevented by regular care and maintenance.

  • Inspect the cable that runs from the brake pedal to the brake system. If something becomes stuck or lodged in this cable, it can cause your brakes to become stuck. To access this cable you will need to check the cable from underneath of your car directly behind that area in which your brake pedal is located.

  • If your brake cable does become stuck, you can often unstick it by firmly grasping the cable with both hands and applying pressure in a pulling motion. This is often enough to unstick a stuck brake pedal cable, and will allow your brakes to work properly again.

  • Check your emergency brake cable if your brakes appear to be stuck. A jam in the emergency brake cable can cause the emergency brake to be stuck in the on position, therefore locking up your brakes and making your car un-drivable.

  • To check your brake cable, you need to locate the emergency brake cable that is located on the underside of your car, this cable can often become stuck and will need to be pulled and unstuck. Debris and other things can cause this cable to become stuck. You should regularly inspect this cable for debris.

  • Brake drums can often become stuck, causing your brakes to lock up and therefore making your car un-drivable. If you believe one of your brake drums is stuck, you need to remove the tire to expose the brakes. Check to see if the drum will spin, if not then it is stuck. Use a hammer to hit the drum and dislodge it, this will often be enough to unstick the drum of your brakes.

  • Check the brake drum on all of your tires regularly to ensure that they are in working order and are not becoming stuck. Regularly inspecting your brakes will help you to maintain your brake system and save you from expensive car repairs later on.
