How To Use a Remote Starter Switch

Compression testing on your vehicle requires the engine be cranked, but if you don't want to crank your starter manually, consider installing a remote starter switch. The switch will crank the engine without starting the car. Temporary remote starter switches can be installed.

For Starters With Exterior Relays

  1. Put the car's transmission into park. Set the emergency parking brake.

  2. Find the starter relay on the sidewall of the engine compartment. It is usually near the battery.

  3. Locate the leads on the relay. There will be two big cables. One runs from the battery and the other to the starter motor. There are other small connectors on the starter relay which allow the starter motor to function.

  4. Hook up the remote switch by attaching one of the clips on the positive side of the battery.

  5. Place the other clip on the switch on the small connector of the relay.

  6. This configuration will allow the motor to be cranked over without actually cranking the starter.

  7. Test the remote starter by pressing the starter switch. The engine should crank without the motor.

For Starters With Built in Relay.

  6. Press the switch and try to crank the vehicle. It should crank if properly placed.
