How To Clean Your Dentures Naturally

How To Whiten Dentures at Home

Dentures are an artificial dental implant used to replace teeth that have become damaged due to injury, decay or periodontal disease. Dentures can become stained from certain foods, beverages and smoking. By using whitening solutions and natural remedies, you can whiten your dentures at home.

  1. Remove the dentures. Start cleaning them by using regular toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Scrub the dentures gently to avoid damage. Ensure you scrub the entire surface of the dentures to thoroughly remove plaque and food particles. A mild dishwashing liquid or hand soap can also be used to clean dentures.

  2. Mix a solution of one cup vinegar and one cup water. Let the dentures soak in the solution for approximately 30 minutes. Remove the dentures and rinse thoroughly. A solution of one teaspoon baking soda and one cup of water can also be used for whitening. Some individuals may recommend using a bleach solution to whiten dentures, however, the American Dental Association advises against this as it may lead to whitening of the pink areas.

  3. Purchase a denture cleansing solution that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Your dentist can recommend the correct cleanser. Cleaning products usually feature a whitening agent and come in a tablet form. The tablets can be placed in a cup of warm water to dissolve. Avoid using hot water, as it can cause damage to the dentures. Place them in the solution and allow to soak overnight. Rinse dentures thoroughly in the morning. Dentures should not be left out to dry overnight, as this may alter the shape the of the dentures.

  4. Place the dentures in an ultrasonic cleaner. Fill the tank with the amount of cleanser and water that is stated in the manufacturer's directions. Turn the unit on and wait until it finishes cleaning. An ultrasonic cleanser should not be used as a replacement for regular brushing of the dentures.
