How to Decorate a Small Kitchen

How to Add Storage to a Small Kitchen

Small kitchens can be frustrating when deciding how and where to store everything.  Whether it's not enough cabinets, small counter space or just too much stuff, finding a place to put everything can be a challenge.  With a little creative thinking, you can add storage space to your small kitchen easily.

  • Decide if you need everything that is in your kitchen.  Go through all your items and either sell or toss things that haven't been used in years.  There will more than likely be some things that you won't even miss once they are gone.

  • Look for other places to store some kitchen items.  Some things that do not get used often throughout the year can be stored in a sealed container in the basement or in a closet.  Those Christmas dishes used once a year need not be taking up space in your cabinets.

  • Install hooks, shelves and peg strips to hang and store items in plain sight.  As an advantage, this style is becoming popular as it provides and open and modern look.  Use the wall space in your kitchen for more than just pictures and it will provide a style and look of its own.

  • Organize bulky items such as Tupperware and pots and pans.  Organizing tools can be found at most department and home improvement stores.  Things such as utensil separators and stacking Tupperware will maximize the space available.

  • Install a free-standing cabinet against a wall and use it to store anything from pantry items to placemats.  Make sure to buy one with doors that close so as not to worry about the items being stored not being grouped visually.

  • Purchase inexpensive shelves that easily install inside cabinets to add an extra layer for all things stackable.  By adding an extra shelf inside a cabinet, you enable things to be stacked upon each other that normally would not.

  • Place a small kitchen island in the center of your kitchen if space allows.  It will give extra counter space for working on, and if you buy one with cupboards underneath, you will have extra space to store objects.
