How to Afford Adult Education

Going to college can be expensive for anyone whether you take classes right out of high school or go back to college as an adult.  Just as a high school student must consider how to pay for college, adults must consider the financial impact adult education can have on a personal budget.  Adults should not avoid education just because they don’t know how to pay for it; most adults can afford adult education.

  1. Use a reputable search engine to find the Free Application for Federal Student Aid website.  Fill out the form and submit it online.  This form will evaluate your income and determine your eligibility for government grants and loans.  As long as you have not earned a bachelor’s degree, you may be eligible for federal education money.

  2. Wait to see if you are eligible for any financial assistance.  You may not need to pursue any other avenue if you qualify for assistance.  If you qualify for a grant, understand that this money does not have to be paid back.  Any loans must be paid back.  The only advantage to taking out a government loan for education is that your payments can be deferred while you are taking classes.

  3. Talk with your employer.  Many businesses offer adult education programs that allow an employee to take certain courses and get reimbursed by the company.  If your adult education will improve the work you do on the job, then your employer may be willing to pay for a portion of your education.

  4. Get a part-time job to help alleviate college expenses.  Many people get jobs at a local grocery store, fast-food restaurant or nearby convenience store.  You may be able to find an online job as a freelance writer or telemarketer. If you can find a job within the school, most schools will give a discounted rate for tuition.

  5. Ask friends and family to invest in your future and help pay for your adult educational expenses.  Most families cannot afford the entire tuition, but any assistance would lessen your expenses.
