How to Alter Sewn Clothing
Altering sewn clothing is sometimes necessary if a piece of clothing does not fit correctly. When you alter clothing that is already sewn it can be a frustrating task to take on. With the right tools and a little bit of patience, you will be well on your way to making alterations to your clothing in no time at all.
Things you will need:
- Scissors
- Iron
- Shears
- Pins
- Thread
- Needles
- Fabric Marker
- Seam ripper
- Try on the garment or have a friend to try the garment on to see how much of the fabric you will need to alter.
- Take the fabric marker and mark what needs to be sewn. Pin the area up so you can make a precise cut. Remove the garment and place it on a table.
- Remove the old seam with the seam ripper. By using this tool, it will assist you with not ripping or tearing the fabric.
- Flip the garment inside out and re-sew the seam.
- Cut the extra fabric from the inside of the clothing and iron the fabric down. Do not forget to remove the pins.
- Stitch a straight stitch along the seam to prevent the thread from raveling. Flip your newly sewn clothing outside in and try it on for size.
