How to Apply Resin on Wicker Furniture
Wicker is a woven fiber that forms a hard material, usually furniture. It frequently requires a type of resin, or lacquer to protect it from wear. Wicker furniture also benefits from an application of wax on top of the lacquer.
- Spray lacquer
- Drop cloth
- Tack cloth
- Furniture wax
- Obtain a lacquer that will produce a matte finish on wicker furniture. This type of lacquer typically contains a catalyst, allowing it to dry more quickly than ordinary varnish. A spray bottle of lacquer is more effective for wicker furniture due to the difficulty of covering this type of furniture with a paintbrush.
- Lay down a drop cloth on a level surface and place the wicker furniture on top of it. Clean the furniture with a tack cloth to remove the surface debris.
- Spray a small area of the wicker furniture with the spray can to practice applying the lacquer according to the manufacturer's instructions. You will generally want to use horizontal passes with the can, slightly overlapping each pass. Keep the spray can about 18 inches from the furniture and cover the entire wicker furniture with a thin even coating of spray lacquer.
- Allow the lacquer coating to dry for at least two days before cleaning the wicker furniture with a tack cloth. Apply a second coat of lacquer and allow it to dry for at least two days before cleaning it with a tack cloth. Apply a third coat of lacquer and allow it to dry for at least four days before cleaning it with a tack cloth.
- Apply furniture wax to a soft cloth and wax the wicker furniture according to the manufacturer's instructions. Buff the wax furniture with a clean cloth to remove the excess wax. This should give the wicker furniture a shiny appearance.
