How to Apply Steel Roofing
Steel roofing is popular amongst homeowners because of its durability. This type of roofing is more expensive than roofing shingles. However, its value long term is better than an asphalt shingle roof. Metal roofing will lower energy costs, and it has a lifetime warranty. Other kinds of roofs are guaranteed for only 25 to 30 years.
Supplies:
- Snips
- Nail bag
- 30-x pound felt paper
- Metal roofing
- Drip edge
- Chalk line
- Tape measure
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Ladder
- Take measurements of the roof to determine its size. Measure the height of the roof first and allow some inches for overhang. Next, measure the length of the roof.
- Take off the old shingles with a shingle remover or pitch fork. Get rid of the dirt and debris. Put down some felt paper with 1¼ inch roofing nails. Cover the whole roof.
- Put some metal edging around the perimeter of the roof. Nail down with some roofing nails.
- Create lines two feet apart down the roof with some chalk. Cut the metal roofing with tin strips to two foot wide sheets. This will be the length of the roof edge to the roof ridge. Make sure to put down the first piece on the left side of the roof, using a one inch metal screw.
- Keep putting down one sheet at a time over the entire length of the roof. Overlap every sheet two inches.
- Put lap screws where the metal sheets overlap. Put on the metal trim next. The trim will go on the sides of the roof on the ridge and edge. Begin at the bottom of the roof.
