How to Apply for Coverage with Medical Insurance Companies

Medical insurance is an important aspect of making your healthcare affordable. Regardless of how often you use insurance, medical insurance can drastically reduce your amount of out-of-pocket spending. If your employer does not offer insurance, you are between jobs, a recent college graduate or self-employed; you will want to consider applying for your own individual medical coverage.

  1. Applying for medical insurance is a simple process that only requires a brief medical history and the ability to navigate the Internet.

  2. Research various insurance companies. Look for insurance companies within your price range, insurances that your current doctors accept and insurances that accept individuals with pre-existing conditions (if applicable).

  3. Consider how long you are going to need your medical coverage for (short or long term). If you only need coverage for short term, you may be able to purchase inexpensive three to six month policy.

  4. Read the insurance policy you are applying for thoroughly before submitting an application. Pay close attention to deductibles, premiums, co-payments, out-of-pocket spending and limitations. Make sure you are choosing the right policy for you.

  5. Apply for medical coverage. Fill out an online application. If you are unfamiliar with the Internet, you can also print the application out and mail it in to the company. Make sure to answer all questions asked. You will be asked to provide information including your age, weight and height along with a brief medical history, including previous surgeries, illnesses and long term medical condition.

  6. Make your first months payment. When applying for insurance, many companies will require a credit card payment for the first month. Your credit card will only be charged if you are accepted for medical coverage.

  7. Await a decision. Insurance companies may take a few days or weeks to notify you of their decision.

  8. Use your new medical coverage. Call your insurance company with questions or use their website if you have questions or concerns regarding the terms of your insurance.
