How to Apply for Government Assistance Housing

Housing assistance is available through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is commonly referred to as HUD. HUD housing offers low-income and free housing to individuals that meet income requirements or those who have a disability. Visit the nearest HUD office to apply for government assistance housing.

  1. Determine where the nearest HUD office is by performing an Internet search using the keywords "HUD office," along with the name of the city and state where you live.

  2. Write down the address and telephone number for the closest HUD office based on the information the search results provide.

  3. Visit the HUD office and request an application of housing.

  4. Review the guidelines for HUD to determine if you are eligible based on family size and income limitations. There are specific income limits that correspond with family size to determine if an applicant is eligible for assistance.

  5. Fill out the application and provide all of the required documentation to file an application for housing. You will need to have a picture ID, proof of income and birth certificates and Social Security cards for everyone on the application.

  6. Ask for a list of housing assistance complexes in the area.

  7. Contact each housing assistance complex to see if they currently have any openings available.

  8. Visit each complex separately to walk through a unit and decide which one you like the best.

  9. Fill out an application at numerous housing assistance complexes. The waiting lists for many of these complexes is often long, so it is best to sign up to more than one to see which one becomes available first.

  10. Wait for a response to one of the applications to be accepted once a unit becomes available and you have reached the top of the waiting list.
