How to Apply for Low Income Housing

Many people believe that applying for low-income housing is difficult. The application process is simple. Typically, low-income families and individuals will be eligible for some form of subsidized housing. The subsidized housing is provided and operated by the U.S. government. You must fill out an application that details your income and your family size.

  1. Create a list that has all of your income, such as your main employment and all sources of income. If you mow lawns, include that on your list. If you work at McDonald’s include the income you make from there. This is information you need when you apply for low-income housing. When you apply for low-income housing, you can apply for an apartment or housing vouchers. The voucher is used for single-family homes. The apartment is usually for individuals.

  2. Contact your local HUD office. If you do not know where your local HUD office is located, go to HUD's official website at HUD.gov to find out this information. You have to request a housing application on the website and you must pick up the application in person or you can complete it online. The application is mailed to you at your current address.

  3. Complete the application for low-income housing. You must fill out the application with accuracy and you must be completely honest with the information that you provide. You have to include documents regarding your income, such as pay stubs, tax documents, etc. as evidence you that you make low income. The information you provide on the application must match the information on your pay stubs and other items that show how much you make in income. HUD will reject your application if it is not accurate.

  4. Submit your application to HUD. You have to wait on a response from HUD via a letter. Once you are approved for low-income housing, an agent will notify you. If low-income housing is not available, you will be on a waiting list. If you have availability for housing, you can immediately select an apartment.
