How to Apply for Nursing CEUs for an Educational Program

A nursing program that wants to provide Nursing Continuing Education Units (CEU's) must obtain their CEUS through their state's local nursing board or apply at the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Continuing education units in most states is mandatory, and they must come from an approved educational provider.

  1. Know your state's continuing education requirements because each state has different requirements. Therefore, you should contact your state either via the telephone or at their website to obtain the information necessary for CEU compliance.

  2. Search the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) website to find out about the process. Look for the accreditation drop down menu and select the primary Accreditation section then select the Application Process page. From there, review the application carefully and complete the application. Most states recognized the ANCC approved nursing programs, but make sure your state is one that does so.

  3. Download the word document on the Accreditation Application Process page. Download the Accreditation Initial Application Eligibility Form as well as the Provider Application. It is necessary that you complete all necessary application forms completely, if you want to continue with your nursing career. You will need to satisfy the eligibility requirements, submit the necessary written documents and do the self-study course.  ANCC will review the application as well as your self- study material and give you the accreditation decision after completion of the review.

  4. Contact your State Board of Nursing either by phone or visit their website to get your state accreditation application. Most state boards will accredit an organization, which has a nursing program in place. However, they will not offer accreditation status for individual courses.
