How to Apply for Supplemental Security Disability Income

Social Security Disability Insurance is commonly referred to as SSDI. This type of federal payment is issued by the Federal government and based off of work credits that have been built up by the person applying for benefits. To file for SSDI benefits, you simply need to visit the Social Security Administration office near you.

  1. Learn the rules associated with Social Security Disability Insurance to determine if you are eligible to receive these benefits. You cannot begin receiving SSDI benefits until you have been disabled for at least 6 months and you must have enough work credits built up in the system to qualify you for benefits.

  2. Use the Internet to locate the closest Social Security Administration office near you by performing an Internet search using the keywords "Social Security Administration," along with the name of the city and state where you live. This search should provide you with the address of local offices in the area where you live.

  3. Write down the address and telephone number of the closest office to where you live.

  4. Visit the nearest Social Security Administration office and let them know that you would like to apply for SSDI benefits. You will be given a number and asked to sit down and wait for the number assigned to you to be called.

  5. Report to the customer service representative that calls you.

  6. Let the representative know that you would like to apply for SSDI benefits. Provide them with your name and Social Security number so that they can determine if you have enough work credits to be eligible for SSDI benefits.

  7. Complete the application you are given in full, and return it to the local office as soon as possible so that you can begin the application process.

  8. Wait for a letter to come in the mail informing you if the application you filed for SSDI benefits has been approved or denied.
