If you are going to be starting your own business, it is very important that you familiarize yourself with what is required by your state, county and city in which your business is located in order to obtain a business license that is valid for the city where your business is located.

• If you want to obtain insurance on your company, you will need to first obtain a business license. Be sure to keep extra copies of your business license on hand so that you can provide them to clients and insurance companies upon request. 

• Use the Internet to determine if the type of business that you are opening requires you to have a business license. Most major trades and professions require you to hold a valid business license at all times.

• If you have recently purchased your business, you may be able to transfer the existing business license that is in place for the business that you have recently purchased. In order to determine if this is the case for your business, you should contact your local municipality for further details.

• Contact the municipality that is in charge of the licensing requirements for your state, city and county individually to determine that you meet the qualifications for all of the municipalities that are in charge of the area where your business is located.
