How to Apply to Film Schools

Film schools provide networking opportunities and invaluable experience to prospective filmmakers. The main focus is on film instruction, such as scriptwriting, theory and production. Many of the programs also include technical training, such as learning how to use lights, cameras and other equipment for movie production.

  • Search the web to find information on different schools. There is a possibility that a film school is not in your local area.  It is important not to limit your search when looking for the best film schools. Doing research allows you to compile a list that meet the criteria for what you want to do.

  • Choose a school with a good reputation. The top film schools are American Film Institute (Los Angeles), New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Beijing Film Academy (China) and University of Southern California.

  • Talk to other film students and people in the industry. If you do not know anyone, then visit online forums. Forums can be used for asking questions about the interview process for admissions. Online communities are a good way to network with other students and find out about film events.

  • Complete an admission application. At this point, you should have school choices narrowed down. The next step is submitting an application. Most schools want students to include a portfolio of their work. Examples to include are work done in mixed media, television or film. Take the media to a professional film laboratory and have it mastered into a reel. A reel is a tape of all movie work done. The application package should include references, reel and any other pertinent information.

  • Schedule an interview and dress professionally. A student demonstrates seriousness and respect by dressing appropriately. First impressions are priceless.
