How to Apply to an Art School
If you are thinking of applying to art school, make sure that you have your application filled out as well as a portfolio set up. Portfolio work is very important to the application process because it shows the art school that you are a proficient and talented artist.
- Make sure that the art school that you are considering has classes and programs that interest you and are geared towards the medium that you are strong in. Art schools often offer a variety of programs but if you are looking to work in a specific area of art, you will need to know that the school has classes and facilities set up for your medium.
- Locate an application to apply to the art school and fill it out. Art schools will ask that you show your portfolio as well so make sure you find out when you need to do this and how many pieces are required to send. You may need to send samples in with your application or you may need to do this after your application has been reviewed so make sure that you find this out.
- Set up your portfolio with your strongest work making sure that you choose a variety of mediums to showcase your talents. Take photos of your work and have slides created to be sent to the school when they ask for your portfolio. Create an artist's statement to include with the portfolio pieces as well. An artist's statement should include why you became an artist, what inspires you and what artists you like best.
- Wait to hear from the school that you have applied to. If you have not been informed of your acceptance after you have sent in your portfolio pieces, contact the school to make sure that they have received them. You should also make sure that your artwork meets their criteria for samples so that you know if you need to send in any additional pieces.
