How to Appraise Antique Dolls

Appraising antique dolls is a skill which must be studied and practiced to gain real knowledge. A little patience and a copy of the doll price guide is a good place to start. Antique dolls come in a range of conditions, and only the most pristine bring high prices. When dealing with antique dolls, examples in great condition are extremely rare to find.

Old dolls are beautiful, rare and frequently hand-crafted. Authentic dolls are worth lots of money, dependent upon condition, and many are reproductions. Such imitations are worth very little, and getting the doll officially appraised is the only way to be absolutely positive.

  1. Look up the doll variety you have questions about in a doll price guide. There are several available online through the Official Price Guide to Dolls website.

  2. Carefully examine the doll and note any damage.  You are looking for cracks, chips, faded colors and worn spots. Be meticulous in your examination because every detail is important to collectors.

  3. Look for a label or identifying mark somewhere on the doll. Many reproductions are clearly marked in some way, or you may be able to verify its authenticity.

  4. If you believe the doll to be genuine, photograph it from several angles, and then take it to a shop that specializes in vintage dolls. Find out in advance if there is a fee for the examination. Share your list of defects with the expert. They should examine the doll and may even perform tests to determine its authenticity.

  5. Insure the doll if it does turn out to be worth a substantial sum. You will want to cover it against theft, damage or loss.
