How to Build a Disc Golf Course

How to Approach the Disc Golf Basket

Approaching the disc golf basket is a strategic undertaking for competitive disc golf players.  In making your approach, you will want to consider the specific type of throw, as well as your release technique.  Just as with golf, there are different drives, or throws, for different scenarios that may occur during play.

Mastering each type of throw will help you improve your overall disc golf score.  As you practice your approach, ensure that you are practicing the correct technique until the throw becomes second nature.

  1. Estimate the distance to the golf basket.  The distance will determine which disc and throw type that you will employ in your strategy.  Examine and account for any obstacles, as well as weather conditions.  Navigating these obstacles will impact the particular disc that you will use.  There is no substitute for experience when it comes to calculating these distances and throw types needed.  In order to become a skilled disc golf player, you will need to log practice hours on a disc golf course.

  2. Play to your strengths.  As with any sport, there will be aspects of the game that you do well, and aspects that you do not do well.  During game play, you will want to try and execute throws that you have already mastered, and try and avoid shots that you struggle with.  The goal at the end of the day is to get to the basket using as few throws as possible, so keep this in mind as you plan your approach.  Use your game play results to identify shots that you need to work on, and practice those at another time.

  3. Target the disc golf basket.  When you begin the hole, you will be throwing in the general direction of the basket.  As you close the distance between you and the basket, you will want to take aim at the center point of the basket.  Ensure that you account for weather conditions, as you may need to account for disc movement due to wind.
