Wheels vs. Tires

How to Assemble Wheels & Tires

Automobile owners all over the nation experience problems with assembling and disassembling their wheels and tires. Many are forced to turn to professionals, where they pay a great deal more than it would cost to complete the tasks on their own.

  1. Gather the tools and supplies that you will need to dissemble and assemble your wheels and tires. You will need a sledgehammer, lever bars, an air compressor an air chuck, a valve tool, and a bead breaker.

  2. Take the old tires off of their rims. This is done by aligning the bead breaker along the bead between the rim and tire and then striking it with the sledgehammer; repeat this process on both sides of the tire. Now use the lever bars to fully separate the tire from the rim by inserting them between the two and prying around the circumference of the rim. The old tire will slip off if these steps are completed correctly.

  3. Place the new tires on your rims and fill them with air. This step is completed by seating the new tire within the rim and removing the air valve, before refilling the tire with air until it is correctly seated along the rim. Replace the air valve and fill the tire to its required setting. This step is made easier by applying a lubricant to the tire and rim before seating the tire.

  4. Take tires that do not have steel rims to professionals. These wheels and tires are much more difficult to assemble and require advanced tools to do so.
