How to Attach a Tecumseh Engine Carburetor

A Tecumseh engine carburetor is a necessary component that keeps the engine running correctly. When it is not working properly, you cannot get the most out of the motor. Replacing the carburetor is not that difficult, but you do have to take care to get it put back together the right way.

Replacing the carburetor of a Tecumseh engine may be required if the engine will not start or you have problems with it surging. The carburetor controls the mixture of fuel and oxygen that undergoes combustion in the engine cylinder. You will find the carburetor mounted to the engine block on the side of the motor with a throttle cable attached to it running to the control panel where the operator increases or decreases the amount of fuel by moving the cable.

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/8 inch wrench

  • Putty knife

  • Pen and paper

  1. Place the engine on a flat workbench, and locate the carburetor which should be just under the air filter on the right hand side of your engine. Remove the air filter and shroud by unscrewing the screw that holds it in place.

  2. Use a wrench to loosen the bolts holding the carburetor in place against the engine block. Find the linkage connected to the top of the carburetor and make a drawing of the way it is connected, and then remove it by hand paying close attention so as not to stretch the spring or bend the linkage.

  3. Go back and remove the two bolts that were loosened during step two. Use a putty knife to remove excess gasket material that remains on the engine at the place where the carburetor rested against.

  4. Set the new carburetor into place sliding the two bolts back into position and turn them by hand to secure it. Be sure to leave the bolts loose at this point. Reposition the fragile spring and linkage as it was before using the picture you made previously, and tighten the bolts again with the wrench.

  5. Put the air filter and shroud back in place.
