How to Be a For Sale By Owner

Although most people would rather sell their home with the help of a realtor, the allure of not having to pay commission causes many people to think otherwise. Selling a home "by owner" can be a lot of extra work, but can save a seller thousands of dollars.

  1. Set the price for the property. This should be done with much thought. A price that is too high can kill any chance that the property will sell quickly. Do some research of comparable homes that have sold in your area. Use this research to help you set your asking price.

  2. List your home online when you are ready to sell. The most popular website for real estate listing is the International Real Estate Directory. The IRED has several packages available for purchase. These packages include your listing and how much information you will be able to put on your page. The more expensive the package you purchase, the more information that you will be able to list.

  3. Buy a sign for your front yard that tells the neighborhood that your property is for sale. Although online listing is important, it is equally important to advertise to those who drive past the property. Put together a small flyer with basic information about the home and place the flyers next to the sign in a weatherproof tube.

  4. When you sell your home "by owner" you will need to be prepared to receive calls about the home at any time. Always have your home ready to show to potential buyers.
