How to Be a Pet Shop Operator
A pet shop operator or owner is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a pet shop. She or he manages employees, handles finances and ensures that the inventory is ordered in a timely manner. In some cases, the pet shop operator works on-site in place of a manager.
- Determine whether you want to open a pet shop franchise or start from scratch. If you opt to open a franchise, you are required to enter a contract with the company offering franchises. If you start from scratch, you should determine the name of your pet shop.
- Obtain a business license for your pet shop from your local licensing board. Ensure that the name you have chosen for your pet shop is available.
- Obtain an employer ID number from the federal Internal Revenue Service. You need this ID number in order to deduct taxes from employee paychecks and to file your income taxes.
- Select a location for your pet shop. You could work with a real estate agent to locate and secure this location either by purchase or by entering into a lease. If you are purchasing a franchise, you are required to work with the franchise company in the selection of this location.
- Set up your pet shop and build your inventory. Determine which products are most popular on the market. Determine which pets sell the best by conducting research online.
- Hire your staff. Determine the amount of employees you need for day-to-day operations. If you will not act as the manager of your pet shop, you need to hire at least two managers.
