How to Become Commercial Movers

Commercial moving can be a very profitable business. Startup cost is fairly low, and with the right equipment you can build a prosperous business quickly. Do research on other successful commercial moving companies and develop a business plan that incorporates their success as well as your suggestions.

Instructions:

  1. Write out a business plan and figure out how can you set your business apart from other commercial moving companies. The moving business is fairly competitive because some companies are willing to offer moving and other services for cheap. You can find many business plan guidelines on the Internet.

  2. Find out from your local government office which permits, licenses, and insurance you will need to run your business. Although moving isn't hard, you should also obtain moving training certification. When dealing with others personal property you want to ensure you understand the basics behind proper packing and loading. This training can help you become more efficient as well as save you time and money.

  3. Find a commercial space large enough to accommodate storage and equipment. If you plan to offer storage space for customers in between moves, you'll need a large enough space. You'll also need to purchase equipment. You will need a dolly and ramps or wooden planks for moving items up and down steps, protective coverings and toolkits.  Other items you may want to consider are packing tape, boxes, moving pads, and other protective moving materials.

  4. Purchase a moving truck. Determine the type of truck you need by how much you can afford and the type of job you will be doing. A small panel truck is good for small local businesses. Be sure to keep your truck maintained and ready to go.

  5. Contact an insurance provider that can provide you with commercial insurance, business insurance and insurance coverage for items that may get damaged in the move. If you are starting a business in Texas, they require that you have at least $300,000 in auto liability and $5,000 in cargo insurance. Obtain the required permits, insurance and licenses needed for your region.

  6. Hire your staff. Your employees should have a basic knowledge and understanding of how to pack and unload furniture. Hire staff with good physical shape and be sure to have backup workers for emergencies and very large jobs.  Consider company uniforms or matching shirts for a professional appeal.

  7. Start a website. List details that show the variety of the services you offer and moving destinations. Provide a page of a moving checklist that instructs on how your customers can prepare for a move. Give your information to local businesses and try to arrange dual marketing.  Explore social media marketing through Facebook, Twitter, and MerchantCircle.
