What Is a Cancer Doctor Called?

How to Become a Cancer Doctor

Oncologists are the doctors who work with patients battling cancer to get them on the road to treatment and hopefully remission. These doctors also work with the patients' families to educate them about the form of cancer that their loved one has. To be this kind of doctor, there are a few requirements that you have to meet.

  1. Finish a four year medical school program.

  2. Apply for a few residency programs that are close to where you are located. Finishing up with your oncology residency is going to take anywhere from two to four years. While you are working on this, you are going to be able to practice surgical techniques such as radiation.

  3. Select what topic you would like to specialize in when you become an oncologist. There are many different types of oncologists, such as surgical, gynecological and radiation oncologists.

  4. Take the exam that is required to become certified. When you have finished all of the requirements in the residency and the medical program, you can get your license. To obtain this license, you have to get an application, submit it and pass the exam. Check out the Internet, or contact them, for the days that they provide testing.

  5. Check out the oncologists that are located near you and set up a day to have an interview with them. Some of your colleagues and professors that you have met during medical school and your residency might be able to tell you who is looking for an oncologist in their practice. This is going to save you a lot of time and energy.
