How to Become a Community Health Nurse

A community health nurse provides important information and medical services to the community. Those working with the community have to have a passion to see neighborhoods and communities thrive with the right medical information. Many community health nurses work to promote and educate good health practices.


  • Speak to a local community or university counselor about your plans to enroll into college. Find out what type of programs each school offers.

  • Enroll in an accredited school to receive a Bachelor of Science degree. If interested check with different schools to find out if they have an accelerated program. Those enrolled in these programs can receive their degree in a year.

  • Take courses required in your nursing program. You will need classes in pharmacology, microbiology and anatomy and physiology. You will be required to complete clinical skills as well, this means you will work a certain amount of hours in a medical setting.

  • Successfully complete the Bachelor of Science nursing program. After completion arrange to take the National Council Licensure Examination known as the NCLEX-RN. You will receive your license after successfully passing the test.

  • Find out from your state licensing board if there are any additional classes that must be taken to become a community health nurse.

  • Take continuing education classes to stay current on different types of medical procedures and nursing information. Many jobs may also offer on the job training and classes.

  • Look for community and public health jobs. You can check on your states website or visit your local health and state department.
