How to Become a Freelance Courier

A freelance courier is hired by businesses to transport documents or items from one place to another. You can become a self-employed freelance courier by following some guidelines. You can earn some good money being a freelance courier, but it will take time for your business to pick up.

  1. Make sure you have a reliable mode of transportation. Using a van is your best bet, as you may have to transport large packages. The van you purchase can be a small van. You will be putting a lot of miles on your vehicle when you are a freelance courier, so make sure you buy something that has low miles and is dependable.

  2. Make sure you have insurance on your vehicle. Make sure you let your insurance know that you are using the van as a freelance courier, because you will need a different type of insurance. Regular insurance will not cover everything that you need. You need to make sure the insurance not only protects your van, but the contents inside of it. People will not use you if you do not have proof of insurance. People like to know their items are insured during transport.

  3. Set up a landline phone number for your business, as well as a mobile phone. You want people to be able to get a hold of you easily. Make up business cards, listing your name, company name, address, cell phone number, landline phone number and email address.

  4. Get your freelance courier company listed in the yellow pages. Create some flyers that you can pass out to businesses in your area. You need to advertise your services or people will not know you are there. In many cases, word of mouth helps a lot, but you have to get that first customer on your own.
