How to Become a GED Testing Site

The GED, or General Educational Development, is an exam that allows students to earn a high school equivalency diploma. GED testing facilities exist throughout the country. If you wish to open a GED testing site in your community, you will need to complete the application process.

  1. Confirm that your proposed site is listed among the acceptable GED testing facilities. Acceptable sites include colleges, high schools, federal correction facilities and military bases. Other sites are not eligible to become a GED testing site. If your site is among the accepted facilities, you will need to prove that a need exists within your community for a GED testing site.

  2. Work on a written plan for the proposed test site. You will be required to describe the facility and outline exactly how you plan to use the facility to administer GED classes and testing. This includes the organization and hiring of site staff, along with the availability and storage of testing and study materials. The written plan must include a preliminary budget, proposed GED testing fees, and the names of community organizations who have pledged to support the facility. You will also be required to provide a class schedule and testing administration plan.

  3. Contact your state's GED administrator. Submit a statement that expresses your interest in opening a GED testing site in your community. Provide a copy of your facility and testing plan as well. Some states require that a GED site application be completed as well. Once your proposal has been reviewed, you will be contacted by the GED administrator regarding their decision.
