How to Become a High School Math Teacher

High school math teachers are some of the most in-demand educators. As a math teacher, you are charged with equipping students with the critical analysis and problem solving skills necessary for life after graduation, whether the next phase is college or direct entrance into the working world. To become a math teacher at the high school level, you must earn a bachelor’s degree, complete the student teaching requirement and obtain a state teaching license.

  • Attend an accredited university or college. Some factors to consider when choosing a school are size, location, cost and academic focus. Research the types of curriculum offered and if needed, speak with faculty and alumni during the process.

  • Decide and select the type of program you wish to pursue. Two popular options offered are a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education or a Bachelor of Science in Education with a mathematics certificate. There are also programs that offer double majors in math and education.  In addition, keep in mind that many states require high school teachers to obtain their master's degree within a set number of years from the commencement of their teaching careers.

  • Complete all curriculum for your chosen program. The customary requisite for a bachelor’s degree is 120 credits but this can vary based on the particular major and course direction.

  • Fulfill the necessary student teaching requirement. The teacher-training program will provide you with hands-on classroom experience under the supervision of a licensed math teacher. This is the opportunity to gain experience with high school students and teaching responsibilities such as lectures, writing and implementing lesson plans and administering tests.

  • Obtain your state teaching license. Every state’s Department of Education mandates individuals to be licensed to teach. Once you have satisfied your teacher training, passed a basic skills exam and earned your degree, you will be eligible for licensure.
