How to Become a Licensed Barber

Barbers typically rent booths or rent small shops to work in. Barbers often choose their own hours to work, and are in charge of operating their hair cutting business. Before becoming a licensed barber, you must first meet any requirements that are set by the state, pass the licensing exam and complete the proper forms to apply for your license.

Step 1: Contact your state's board of cosmetology to find out what the education requirements are for your state. Some states will require you to have a high school diploma or GED, while others may insist that you complete cosmetology courses at a local college or technical school. Complete the proper training and education.

Step 2: Contact your state's department of licensing and regulations. Find out what types of licenses are required to become a barber in you state. Complete the proper forms to apply for the licenses.

Step 3: Study and complete the licensing exam if required in your state. Not all states require an exam. Check with the licensing and regulations department to see if the exam is required, and the dates and time the exam can be taken. Allow yourself adequate time to prepare for the exam. Most exams consist of both physical and written tests. The physical test may require you demonstrate your barber skills on a real person or mannequins. The written portion will ask you question about being a barber, and the services you will provide.

Step 4: Renew you license every year. This process will vary from state to state. Some states will require you to take an exam every year to renew you license; others may allow you to renew them by simply completing an application online or in person.
