How to Become a Licensed Locksmith
Locksmiths are professionals that help people and businesses secure valuable items from fire, vandalism, theft and other forms of loss. They know the inner workings of locks and safes. - Earn a high school diploma or GED (General Education Development)- Having basic education provides the foundation for entry into the work force and the qualifications for locksmith training programs and entry-level employment. Courses in applied trades such as workshop, business, customer service and communication can establish the key background needed for work in this valuable and highly skilled trade.
- Complete a locksmith training program-this can be found at vocational and trade schools, community colleges and through the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), ALOA offers financial aid for qualified applicants. Military service people have access to Military locksmith training programs
- Work as an apprentice to a professional locksmith. This can provide hands on experience and entrance into the job market by the applying all of the aspects of classroom training in this highly lucrative trade.
- Pass a certification exam - Many states require certification to work as a locksmith, however some regions may or may not require this. Certification is very important to establish credibility as a locksmith as well as the expertise as a professional. The ALOA and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA) offer various grades of certification for locksmiths. The basic exam qualifies a person as a Registered Locksmith (RL)
- Training in the locksmith trade - As security and locking devices become increasingly complex in today's world, the education requirements for locksmithing may increase. There are over 100 courses offered by the ALOA in locksmithing that cover many different aspects of the lock and safe trade. The training is designed for working professionals. The certification training requirements can be completed in a few weeks through online, weekend or night schedules.
