How to Become a Locksmith

Locksmiths unlock locks using a variety of tools, keys and techniques. Many locksmiths also build locks and matching keys. Some locksmiths prefer to pick locks by hands and others use tools such as locksmithing guns. Once a locksmith picks and opens a lock, the lock is removed and replaced with a new lock and matching key.

  1. Visit the The Associated Locksmiths of America website to see if any training classes are being offered in your area. There are classes designed to teach the different techniques of lock picking as well as each way to pick a certain lock. These classes provide you with information you need to pass the locksmith certification exam.

  2. Talk with the local locksmiths in your area to see if you can become an apprentice. While the training classes teach you a great deal about locksmithing, hands-on experience teaches you even more. Many locksmiths start out as apprentices to other certified locksmiths. Another locksmith may be able to teach you about certain tools and techniques that were not covered in the training courses. They can also help you prepare for your certification course.

  3. Take the locksmith certification test. This exam tests you on all of the information covered in your locksmith training classes. Once you have passed the test, you are a certified locksmith. Being certified helps you attract customers and find more jobs. Many places do not hire a locksmith who is not certified. You can find the dates, times and locations of the locksmith certification on The Associated Locksmiths of American website.
