How to Become a Self-Employed Housekeeper

If you have a knack for house cleaning and have always dreamed of starting your own business, you should consider becoming a self employed housekeeper. It will take hard work to get things started but it will pay off in the long run.

  1. Check with your state and local government to find out if you need to be bonded and insured. Some areas require this and some don't so it’s best to find out before you start your first job. Also, check to find out what taxes you are going to be responsible for as a self employed independent contractor.

  2. Talk to your friends and family members about your intent of becoming a professional housekeeper. Word of mouth is one of the fastest ways to grow business so having those that are closest to you vouch for your professionalism and hard work will help you become successful in building a client base.

  3. Buy basic cleaning items that you will take to your clients’ houses. You will need a vacuum, cleaners, degreasers, bleach and disinfectants to ensure that you will have what you need to effectively clean your client's home. Some clients may provide all the equipment necessary but it's best to bring them with you in case they don’t.

  4. Decide what rate you will charge for specific duties. Charge a set rate for basic house cleaning and charge extra for more in depth tasks such as deep cleaning, carpet shampooing, laundry or dishes. Meet with your clients before the first cleaning session to discuss what they expect of you and to agree on the payment terms.
