How to Become a Shaolin Monk

In order to become a Shaolin Monk, there are 10 basic concepts that you must understand and have the ability to do. These concepts include principles of the culture, as well as the physical skills that are associated with the concept.

  • Understand the concept of chi, which is another term for the energy that flows through the body. The chi must be able to flow freely through you in order to allow you to move swiftly and act with aggression.

  • Be in complete control of your body movements. Whether you are walking or attempt to run intensely from one location to another, your body must have the agility it takes to move with ease and precision.

  • Ensure that every punch you throw is unable to be predicted. When fighting, you must be able to surprise your competitor with every jab you throw. If the punches are predictable, the fight can quickly turn into you being attacked.

  • Calculate every move you make. Always be aware of the movements you anticipate since it is known that one large movement is less efficient that several smaller movements if the focus is not there.

  • Become one with nature. This includes the five elements: water, fire, air, earth and space. Once you become knowledgeable of how each element interacts with the next, you become strong as a result.

  • Learn and become familiar with ba tiao.

  • Ensure that your senses are unified. You must be able to hear, see and feel the moves your opponents make.

  • Always be prepared to move, but never move when it is not necessary as it wastes energy.

  • Keep your opponent from regrouping.

  • Use your mind as your best weapon in combat.
