How to Become a Social Work CEU Provider
Continuing education is required for many professions, including the field of social work. Each state mandates the amount of hours needed and what is approved. The licensing board accepts CEU's from approved workshops, and seminars taught by approved Continuing Education Unit (CEU) providers.
- Check the state's requirments. Go the licensure section of the state's government website and review the requirements to become a CEU provider.
- Apply to become a CEU provider. It takes several months or more to become approved in most states, so you need to begin the application process well in advance. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully, as any errors can delay the approval process. Include all requested documentation and fees.
- Maintain proper records of all documentation. Once the approval letter arrives, make duplicates of both it and your certificate and keep them in a safe place. You are required to display the original certificate at the training location in clear view. If you have a website and will be offering online training, then you will need to post your certificate electronically.
- Keep your certification current. Make sure to renew your certificate according to your state's requirements.
- Promote your events. Certify with the National Systems Contrators Association, or NSCA, to broaden the number of social workers you are able to reach. Newsletters will be sent out with information on training seminars and workshops.
- Check the status of the social worker's license. Before holding a seminar or workshop, you need to make sure that the licenses of the social workers that are attending are still valid. You can check the status online by using the license look up feature.
