How to Become an Automotive Insurance Adjuster
Insurance adjusters are responsible for interviewing people who have been in an auto accident. They must then negotiate reasonable prices for car repairs and ensure that a rental vehicle is available, if necessary. Furthermore, they are responsible for evaluating physical damage so that a liability assessment can be made.
- Attend college and earn a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. These are the individuals whom insurance companies prefer to hire. However, you can also take an entry-level position and work up to become an automotive insurance adjuster. Don't be discouraged if you don't have a Bachelor's degree in this field because recruiters are always looking for highly skilled workers. If you are just entering college though and know that this is the field that you want to work in, then it is best to obtain a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
- While in college, apply for insurance adjuster internships. These are usually available through larger companies like State Farm, All State and Progressive. During your internship you will be able to learn more about this job while doing some networking.
- Look for an entry-level position. If you don’t have a Bachelor’s degree, apply to become an insurance claims processor so that you can gain the experience that you need. In a few years most companies will encourage you to become an insurance adjuster for them. However, you should let your manager know about your goals so that he can help you achieve them.
- Make sure to keep your resume up-to-date. It needs to showcase the skills that are required for this job (i.e. communication, conflict resolution) and that you understand local laws. You can find examples of resumes that you can use for this position online.
- Be on the lookout for an automotive insurance adjuster job. If you have a Bachelor’s degree or at least three years of industry experience, apply for such jobs.
