How to Blend Auto Paint
Accidents can happen that can damage your car paint. Many of those minor damages only require blending the auto paint. Doing the work yourself can save you money and time by leaving out the body repair or detailing shop. The task is time consuming but easy to accomplish.
Materials Needed:
- Cloth
- Steel wool pad
- Plastic cover
- Scissors
- Paint
- Paint thinner
- Paint gun
- Blending solvent
- Clear coat
- Park the car in a shaded area. A work garage will be a good place to work on the car as long as it is not in the sun.
- Wet a cloth and wring most of the water out until it is damp. Use the cloth to wipe around the area you want to paint. Use another cloth to wipe the area dry. Wait 15 more minutes to make sure the area is completely dry.
- Scrub the area you just wipe with a steel wool pad. Use circular motions as you make your way around the area. Remove the dust with a cloth.
- Place a plastic cover over the entire car but use scissors to cut a hole around the area that will have the paint blended in.
- Tape the edges of the hole with tape. You do not want to expose the undamaged part of the vehicle.
- Mix the paint and paint thinner according to the instructions. Apply the mixture to a paint gun.
- Make sure the pressure on the paint gun is set 20 psi. Apply the paint to the car with back and forth motions. Allow the first coat to sit for 15 minutes. Apply another coat of paint. Allow the paint to dry for 15 minutes.
- Once the paint gun is ¼ full with the paint mixture, apply blending solvent in with the paint.
- Clean the paint from the paint gun and apply clear coat in it. Apply a coat of clear coat with the paint gun. Allow the clear coat to dry for 15 minutes. Apply two more coats of clear coat but wait 15 minutes between each application.
- Once the car is dry, remove the tape and plastic cover. The paint will be blended.
