How to Block Out a Bathroom Window

Glass blocks in the bathroom window may give you the privacy you desire. Glass blocks are less expensive than traditional windows and allow for a number of design options. Glass blocks add a hipness to your decor, while allowing more light into the bathroom. But, when deciding to use glass blocks, remember that they do not open.

  1. Measure the area that you want to block. Glass blocks come in a uniform shape and size.  Determine how many rows and columns you need to cover the existing window or space. The dimensions should equal the number of glass blocks to be fitted, including the grout joint between each block and around the perimeter.

  2. Take the measurements when buying the blocks. Once home, lay the blocks in the space without the mortar to determine how the blocks will look.

  3. Prepare the area by installing a 3/4-inch board around the perimeter of the opening for support. Mix the waterproof cement mortar according to the directions on the package.  Install masonry jambs around the edges of the spaces where the glass blocks are to be installed, and affix them in place with the mortar.

  4. Put a layer of the waterproof cement along the sill, and put the glass blocks on top of the mortared sill.  Carefully put the mortar between the blocks so they are solidly in place on all sides when the mortar dries.

  5. Continue layering the blocks.  Clean excess grout with sponge or paper towels. Let the glass blocks cure for 48-hours. Wipe with clean dry cloth. Apply silicone on the sides and corners.
