How to Breed African Love Birds
African lovebirds are known to be very friendly pets. They are small parrots and there are nine distinct species. However, you can still breed them all by using the same techniques. Learning the right steps in order to breed African lovebirds is a simple and easy process.
Things you will need to breed African lovebirds:
- Nesting material
- Nesting box
- Get a male bird and a female bird for mating purposes. The females will have broader shoulders and heads than the males. They also have a wider pelvic span. When a bird is on its back, touch the region right above the tail. If you notice two small points of bone that are close together, that will indicate a male bird. If the points happen to be spaced more evenly, that will indicate a female bird.
- Make sure to keep the bird communally. Keep the birds in a group of four or five for the best chances of successful breeding. This method lets the birds choose their own mates and increases the opportunity for egg production.
- Put a nesting box in the cage. A nesting box can be bought from many pet stores. The boxes are made of straw or wicker and can hang in the cage. If you can’t come across a nesting box for lovebirds, pick one that is for a Cockatiel because they are around the same size.
- Put the nesting material in the bottom of the cage. This will help with the Lovebirds lining their nest. You can use materials like shredded paper towels, shredded newspaper, twigs, dried grasses, and palm fronds.
- Look of eggs. An African Lovebird will produce between four and six eggs. They will be incubated for 21 to 24 days. The eggs will then hatch and you can start to hand tame the chicks after a week.
