How to Breed Cockatiel Pet Birds
If you have an interest in breeding cockatiels, it is not a difficult task, but it does require you to have the time and patience that is required. You need the correct materials and know how to recognize healthy males and females. Cockatiels lay between 4 and 6 eggs and they hatch in approximately 19 to 21 days.
- Choose a pair of cockatiels that
are healthy so that you can begin breeding. Reputable breeders are
the best place to find healthy birds. The birds should have clear
eyes, all feathers should be in place, and when you approach the
bird, it should not fluff its feathers. Look for the birds to be
curious, attentive, and lively. - Purchase a cage that is large
enough to hold the birds, a nesting box, and the chicks once
they hatch. It is better to have a cage that is slightly too large
than one that is too small, you do not want the parents cramped for
space. - Put the cockatiels in the cage
together so that they can get used to each other. Make sure you
provide a healthy diet to both. Include seed mix, fruits, fresh
greens, and sprouts. In addition, provide a mineral block to ensure
the female gets plenty of calcium. Make sure your birds have a
supply of water that is fresh daily. - After the female begins nesting
check the box every day to see if there are eggs. Make sure you do
not frighten the mother with your presence. Typically, you should
begin seeing some eggs between one and three weeks after you see she
is nesting, do not disturb the eggs, allow nature to take its
course. Once the chicks hatch, make sure to give extra food to the
birds so they can feed the chicks.
