How to Build Birdhouses With Roofing Supplies & Materials

Building a birdhouse on your property can attract a wide variety of species for you to enjoy while relaxing on your front porch or backyard area. Use your creativity with roofing supplies to make these houses for your landscape design.

Things You Will Need:

  • Scrap wood

  • Hand saw

  • Leftover shingles

  • Paint

  1. Determine the types of birds you wish to attract. For instance, since birds range in size and shapes, this is an important piece of information to know when designing your birdhouse. You want the birds to be able to fit into the birdhouse.

  2. Make a box structure that is large enough for the bird to fit into. Ideally, more small birds can fit into a birdhouse that is 12 inches tall and 6-by-6 inches for length and width. In order to make the house portion of this project, use the scrap pieces of wood from the material you have to work with. Modify the pieces, if necessary, with a hand saw to be the appropriate size.

  3. Make a top with the old shingles to enhance the overall design. If you wish to add an extreme amount of detail, cut each shingle into miniature shingles so that the roof on the birdhouse looks like a normal roof on any other home.

  4. Cut a hole in the front of the birdhouse that is large enough for the birds to fit through. Ideally, this hole should be round with a diameter of 1.5 to 2 inches.

  5. Decorate the piece by painting and adding your own personal touches for the finished product. You can paint the house to match yours, or you can choose any other type of decorative approach.
