How to Build Dog Crates
Dog crates are used as training tools for dogs that are in a new environment, or at home when the owners are away. It offers a place where the dog can feel safe and secure. Crate training is useful during the dog’s potty training. Crates can also be used to contain untrained puppies that react to the sudden influx of visitors.
Items Needed:
- Wooden planks
- 12 two-by-fours
- Plywood
- Hinges
- Latch
- Hammer
- Nails
- Saw
- Plan the design of the dog crate. This will be determined by the size of the dog. The canine must be able to stand and even turn around in the crate. The crate must be made comfortable for the dog and simple for the owner to use.
- Measure the length, width and height required for the crate. Getting the right measurements will enable you to decide the amount of materials you need to purchase and the best placement for the crate in the home.
- Select the right materials for the crate. Pine is a good choice and is commonly used to make animal crates. Unfortunately, some animals chew on wood. Metal fencing wire with an angle iron frame is another good choice.
- Make the top and bottom frames for the crate using the 12 two-by-fours cut to the dimension of the crate.
- Place planks of wood on a flat surface to create the top and bottom sections of the crate. You will need the same size for the top and bottom pieces. Nail the pieces for the bottom section together.
- Cut the wood to the desired length to make the sides of the crate. Make the side pieces and nail them together at least three or four inches apart. This will give the dog enough breathing space.
- Create the sides and the back of the crate and then place the top piece and nail it onto the side pieces.
- Install the door of the dog crate. Cut the wood and attach hinges on it. Attach hinges on one side of the crate and install the door. Open and shut the door to ensure that it opens freely.
- Attach a latch to the opposite side and make sure it locks properly.
- Place a two cut pieces of plywood into the crate to create the floor. Cut the pieces so that they will fit in and out of the crate.
