How to Build Equestrian Stables

An equestrian stable should be a safe and comfortable place for your horse.  By taking into account some simple design considerations, you can build a simple yet effective stable for your horse that your horse will like without paying too much money.

1. Decide on the type of material to use for the floor.

Concrete is the most common material used in flooring for equestrian stables, but its surface must be roughed up a bit to make sure that horses do not slip on it.  Proper design of equestrian stable floors must ensure that a drainage system is in place, as ammonia will build up the stalls otherwise.  People choose hard surfaces like concrete or stone pavers because they are easy to hose down and to disinfect, but the concrete is hard on the horses legs.

2. Decide on how tall you wish the ceiling to be.

The standard height for ceiling in a home is about 8 feet, but this is only enough clearance for small horses and ponies.  A full-size horse will need a slightly taller ceiling, and it should be free from obstructions like low hanging beams and exposed nails that might hurt the horse if it accidentally raised its head.

3. Pick a location and follow your horse barn plan.

When deciding on a location for an equestrian barn, you should stick to someplace which is close to a road for easy access.  A horse barn plan will give you detailed instructions on the size of lumber you need to frame the stalls as well as the hardware needed for doors and stall closures.
