How to Build Garage Storage Racks
If the garage has become a catch-all for everything you own, it's time for serious organization. Garage storage racks are a great solution to the problem. Since the garage holds a variety of things it is important to build shelves which are sturdy and big enough to store everything.
Supplies
- Four 2 x 4s six feet in length
- Six 2 x4s four feet in length
- Three 1 x 12s four feet in length
- Hammer
- Nails
- Stud finder
- Screws
- Drill with a bit
- Purchase your lumber for the project. Use pre-cut lumber to build the shelves because it can help reduce the time it takes to assemble and complete the project.
- Lay out two of the six feet 2 x 4s on the floor. These should be parallel to one another and about four feet apart. The four inch side of the board should be on the floor for both boards.
- Position three of the four feet 2 x 4s perpendicularly to the original runners already on the floor. Place these at two, four and six feet intervals. Nail the boards together where they meet at each of the junctions.
- Repeat the above steps to build another structure identical to the first unit.
- When finished, stand the two ladder-like forms upright and parallel to one another. Make sure the cross rungs are on the inside, turned toward one another. Position the 1 x 12 four feet boards between the two frames. The edges of the shelves should be resting on the cross pieces.
- Nail the boards to the cross pieces with hammer and nails.
- Have an assistant help you move the shelves to the location on the garage wall they will be placed.
- Use a stud finder to find any studs in wall. Drill holes in the back for the frame of the shelf. Now, attach the frame into the wall studs with screws. This will secure the racks into place.
